Please help me identify this rock/mineral/stone

My wife was handed down this rock/mineral/stone originally from her grandmother. She liked it and thought it would look nice as a decorative piece (she wasn’t wrong). But I digress, we have no idea where it came from, how it came into possession, its origin, and not a single clue as to what it may be.

I have been researching for days now and the closest conclusion I could come to was Galena. I know absolutely little to nothing about Geology other than I find it extremely interesting.

I conducted a few quick experiments/analysis to help in my search (it did not help me) but below were my results:

  • It weighs 11.7 ounces or 333g
  • It is approximately 3 inches in length or 7.5cm
  • It is not magnetic
  • It does not scratch or chip easily (I used a safety pin)

That is as much information as I could provide. Hoping someone much more intelligent than I has an answer or can guide me to one. Thank you for your help!

  1. This is very difficult because they are not identifiable in the photo, but I think the first and third photos are hematite. You said this is not magnetic, but hematite is generally non-magnetic or weakly magnetic. The second photo looks like coal (coal is also non-magnetic). This mineral looks like a type of tourmaline.
